My goodness, where to begin. Band had one of the biggest impacts on my life, and I find myself looking back and missing it every single day. My experience in band turned out to be such an important factor in getting me to where I am today. I am a fine arts teacher! I went into college as an elementary education major, and have both my bachelors and masters degrees in Elementary Education. That being said, I always imagined that I would be teaching in a general education classroom, when instead I ended up in a music and art classroom! I did not study music in college, and it is my background in band that has helped me be successful in teaching music to my kindergarten-5th grade students! Without my experience as a drum major, I wouldn’t have had any idea where to begin to direct children in a school wide music program!

Not only has band been helpful to me in my career, but band has taught me valuable lessons about what it means to be a family, to work hard for something because you want it not only for yourself, but for everyone else in your “family.” I learned integrity, accountability, what it means to be disciplined, and how to get through hardships. My drum major experience was a unique one, and while I had a really difficult year that year, it taught me what it truly means to be a leader, to have a target on your back, and to wear a smile when you know it’s what those looking up to you need to see. This has helped me tremendously as a teacher, friend, sister, fiancé, daughter, and Christian woman. How to lift others up even when you don’t feel like it. How to be the best for someone else, so that you can see them be successful too. 

Band has and always will be a huge blessing in my life, and I am so thankful for the experiences and lessons the Redhawk band program gave me.

Once a Redhawk, always a Redhawk. I am so proud of how far the band program has come in the five short years since I was a member. Keep up the AMAZING work band, you’ll carry this program with you for the rest of your life!
